How to make Pong in Unity Lesson 5

Play Classic Pong

For this lesson, we will show you how to fix the flow of your pong game. Right now that ball we just start moving automatically, we want to fix this so the ball only starts moving once a player has given some input.

We need to add some code to the update function of our GameController script, so go ahead and open it up. First, we want to set the inPlay variable to true but we only want to do this if it is false and the gameOver variable is also false. We also only want to do this if the players click the mouse to start the ball moving.

void Update () {
		if(inPlay == false && gameOver != true)
		{
			if(Input.GetButtonDown("Fire1") || Input.GetKeyDown(KeyCode.Space))
			{
				inPlay = true;
			}
		}
        if (Input.GetKeyDown(KeyCode.Escape))
        {
           SceneManager.LoadScene(0);
        }
        Winner();
	}

Once inPlay is true we then need to switch over back to our BallController script and add some code. In the Update function of this script, we want to add another if statement around everything we’ve already added. This if statement will get the inPlay variable from the GameController instance and check to make sure it is true. This will make it so the ball will only start moving once a player has clicked the mouse, ultimately helping with the flow of the game.

Your new Update function for the BallController script should look something like this

void Update () {
	if(GameController.instance.inPlay == true)
	{
            	if(!setSpeed)
            	{
                		setSpeed = true;
                		xSpeed = Random.Range(-2f, 2f);
               		ySpeed = Random.Range(-2f, 2f);
            	}
	MoveBall();
	}

Now save this script and go back to the GameController script.

The next thing we can add for the flow of our game is a mechanic to load to the main menu that we will be creating. To do this we will add a new if statement to the Update function. This if statement will check for the input of play when they do something like clicking the escape key. If this if statement is true then we will load scene 0.

We will then one more way for the players to load back to the main menu scene. This will be done with a new public void function called MainMenu. Inside this function, we will just load scene 0. This function will be used for a button on our game over panel.

Now save all your script and go back to Unity. Inside Unity, all we need to do is set the OnClick event of our MenuButton object.

We also need to create a new scene and set up the build order for our game. Go ahead and save your game scene then go to File>New Scene. New will build this new scene in the next lesson but for now, just save it. We then want to go to File>Build Settings and add both your new scene and the game scene into the Scene In Build field with the new scene as scene 0.

To test your project you will not be able to do much yet with this new main menu scene but you should be able to see the ball start and stop and be able to load into the main menu scene.

How to make Pong in Unity Lesson 4

Play Classic Pong

Now that we have the ball and paddles working we can code the point system for our game. Let’s get started by creating a new C# script. Add it to your Scripts folder and call it GameController then open it up. Once opened, we will begin by adding a few namespaces up at the top.

UnityEngine.UI
UnityEngine.SceneMenagement

Now we need to create the variables we will need for this script and here are the ones we’ll need

public static GameController instance;

public bool inPlay = false;
bool gameOver = false;
public int scoreOne;
public int scoreTwo;

[SerializeField] int scoreToWin;
public Text textOne;
public Text textTwo;

[SerializeField] GameObject gameOverPanel;
[SerializeField] Text winnerText;

We now need to initialize the instance variable of this script. This will be done in the OnEnable function. At this point, we can now go back to our BallController script and make it so points are added when a player scores. At the bottom of the BallController script, we will add the special OnTriggerEnter2D function. Inside this function, we will add two of the same if statements. The first will be for if the ball enters player 1’s endzone and the other will be for player 2’s. Inside these, if statements we want to first access the scoreOne or scoreTwo variables from the GameController instance that increment it by 1. We then need to update the display for these scores and finally, we can set inPlay and setSpeed to false and reset the ball. Now save this script and go back to the GameController script.

void OnTriggerEnter2D(Collider2D other)
	{
		if(other.tag == "EndOne")
		{
			GameController.instance.scoreOne ++;
            GameController.instance.textOne.text = GameController.instance.scoreOne.ToString();
            GameController.instance.inPlay = false;
            setSpeed = false;
            myRb.velocity = Vector2.zero;
            this.transform.position = Vector2.zero;
        }
		else if(other.tag == "EndTwo")
		{
            GameController.instance.scoreTwo++;
            GameController.instance.textTwo.text = GameController.instance.scoreTwo.ToString();
            GameController.instance.inPlay = false;
            setSpeed = false;
            myRb.velocity = Vector2.zero;
            this.transform.position = Vector2.zero;
        }
	}

Now we need to create a new function for when the game is over. This will be a void function called Winner. Inside this function, we will first check for if the gameOver variable is false. We will then check to compare the player’s scores with the scoreToWin variable. If scoreOne is great or equal we will then set gameOver to true, set the winnerText variable to display that “Player 1 Wins”, and activate the gameOverPanel. If scoreTwo is greater or equal, we will then do the same things but set the winnerText to be “Player 2 Wins”. Once you have this make sure you call this function within the Update function and then save all your scripts and go back to Unity.

Inside Unity, create a new empty object called GameController and attach the new script to this object. You will then need to set the variables of this script.

Now you can test your project and you should be able to see the score increase when the players score points. You should also be able to see the gameOverPanel activate when a player’s score reaches the scoreToWin value.

How to make Pong in Unity Lesson 3

Play Classic Pong

Now we want to create a prefab for the ball object of Pong, which is the other major piece of the game besides the paddle. To do this we will begin with the ball controller script. Go ahead and create a new C# script in your scripts folder and call it BallController. Then double click on it to open it up in your coding environment.

The first thing we will do inside this script is to create some new variables.

Rigidbody2D myRb;
bool setSpeed;
[SerializeField] float speedUp;
float xSpeed;
float ySpeed;

Now, we need to initialize our Rigidbody2D variable and we can do this within the Start function. Next, let us create a new function that we will use to move the ball. This will be a void function called MoveBall with no

Developer’s Insight: We need to think about how we want to move the ball. We are already moving the paddles with the Translate function and if we move the ball in the same way then there will be no physics interactions that we need in order to trigger different events. Because of this, it would be best to move the ball using the velocity variable of the Rigidbody component.

Inside this function, we want to set the velocity the balls Rigidbody using a new Vector2 value of our xSpeed and ySpeed variables. We then want to call this function with our Update function.

But before we call the MoveBall function in the Update function we need to add some code to set the speed of the ball. This can be done by first, checking to see if the setSpeed variable equals false. If it is we then want to set it to true and set the xSpeed and ySpeed variables equal to a random range between the same number negative and positive.

Now we need to code for the different physics interactions our ball can have. The first will be for when it collides with another 2D collider. This is done by adding the special OnCollisionEnter2D function. Inside this function, we need to first hand the condition for if our ball collides with a wall object. Inside this condition, we must simple inverse the value of our xSpeed variable by multiplying it by -1. We then need to handle the condition for if our ball collides with a paddle. Inside this, if statement we must first invert the ySpeed variable by doing the same as we did with the xSpeed variable above. Then depending on the direction of the ball, we need to add or subtract the speedUp value to the ySpeed and xSpeed variables. If the speed is positive then you want to add. If the speed is negative then subtract.

Here is our version of this script so far.

using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;

    Rigidbody2D myRb;

                ySpeed = Random.Range(1f, 2f) * Random.Range(0, 2) * 2 - 1;
            }
			MoveBall();

	}

There is another physics interaction that we will need to code for the ball but we first need to code a different script so for now we will save this script and revisit it later. Go ahead and return to Unity. Inside Unity Create the following object.

  • : This is a 2D sprite object with the ball image as the sprite. It also has a Circle Collider 2D component, a Rigidbody 2D and our BallController script.

Once you have created this object in your scene, go ahead and turn it into a prefab by dragging it from your hierarchy into your Prefabs folder. Now with the ball and paddles still in your scene, you can test your game by clicking the play button. The ball should start moving immediately and If it hits the walls or you paddles it should “bounce” off.

Creative Thought: You could find a way to spawn more balls into your game making it harder for the players to protect their endzone.
